measured by wind speed, and cyclones are accorded a category
based on these factors. The category of the intensity of
cyclones is as follows:
- Category 1 - gales with gusts to
125 km/h
- Category 2 - destructive winds with
gusts of 125 -170 km/h
- Category 3 - very destructive winds
with gusts of 170 - 225 km/h
- Category 4 - very destructive winds
with gusts of 225 - 280 km/h
- Category 5 - very destructive winds
with gusts exceeding 280 km/h
- Fact 10 - The average life of most
cyclones is 1 week
- Fact 11 - Cyclones are assigned
names
- Fact 12 - Names are
given to meet the the need for a unique identifier in issuing
forecasts and warnings
- Fact 13 - During the last two
hundred years tropical cyclones have been responsible for the
deaths of about 1.9 million persons worldwide
