  • Fact 1 - Definition: The heart is a muscle which pumps blood it receives from veins into arteries throughout the body. It is composed of specialized muscle called "cardiac muscle". The heart, veins and arteries make up the circulatory system

  • Fact 2 - The human heart is located to the left of the middle of the chest
  • Fact 3 - It is about the size of the fist
  • Fact 4 - It sends blood around the body providing it with oxygen and nutrients
  • Fact 5 - The heart is like two pumps in one. The right side receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out to the body

    • Aorta - the large trunk artery that carries blood from the left ventricle to branch arteries
    • Aortic Valve - the valve between the left ventricle and the aorta; prevents blood from flowing from the aorta back into the heart

    • Right Ventricle - the chamber on the right side of the heart that receives venous blood from the right atrium and pumps it into the pulmonary trunk
    • Tricuspid Valve - situated between the right atrium and the right ventricle; allows blood to pass from atrium to ventricle and closes to prevent backflow when the ventricle contracts
    • Pulmonary Valve - situated between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery; prevents blood from flowing from the artery back into the heart
    • Pulmonary Artery - carries blood from the heart to the lungs
    • Pulmonary Vein - carries blood from the lungs to the heart
    • Left Atrium - the left upper chamber of the heart that receives blood from the pulmonary veins
    • Left Ventricle - the chamber on the left side of the heart that receives blood from the left atrium and pumps it into the aorta
    • Mitral Valve - the valve that controls blood flow between the left atrium and left ventricle in the heart
  • Fact 7 - The heart of an adult person pumps about 5 quarts of blood each minute - approximately 2,000 gallons of blood each day throughout the body
  • Fact 8 - heart beats about 100,000 times every day
  • Fact 9 - An adult woman's heart weighs about 8 ounces and a man's weighs about 10 ounces
