he name of this Planet is derived from the Mythical Roman god Jupiter was the supreme god of the Roman pantheon, he was said to be the god of light and sky, and protector of the Roman state and more importantly all it's laws. Jupiter is clearly visible in the night sky with the naked eye and in consequence has been known since pre-historic times, it was however thought to be a "wandering star" rather than a Planet.
The first spacecraft to visit Jupiter was the American "Pioneer 10" in 1973.
In July 1994, the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter with quite spectacular results. The effects were clearly visible even with small telescopes, larger instruments were able to detect remaining evidence of the collision for nearly a year!

How far is the Planet Jupiter away from the Sun ?
Jupiter is the fifth furthest planet in our Solar system from the Sun, the average distance being 788 million Km (5.20 Au), Earth by comparison is five times this distance away from the sun.

The Planet Jupiter has a diameter of about 142984km, eleven times that of the Earth, this makes it the biggest Planet in our Solar System, and it's mass is in the order of 1.90e27 kg, far higher than any of the other Planets in our Solar System, 318 times greater than that of Earth.

What is it like on the surface of the Planet Jupiter ?
Jupiter is a gas planet consisting of approximately 90% hydrogen and 10% helium and consequently has no surface as such, the gases simply get denser with increasing depth. Winds on the Planet have been measured in excess of 400 mph by space probes.

Does the Planet Jupiter have any Moons ?
Jupiter has four Major Moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, all of which were discovered by Galileo
in 1610, they are collectively known as the Galilean moons in his honour, a further 59 far smaller satellites haves since been discovered.
