  • Fact 1 - The Apache tribe are a a member of the Athapaskan people and the indigenous people of the American southwest desert regions, the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The Plains Apache lived far away from the other Apaches in Oklahoma and their life style was more similar to the Kiowa tribe
  • Fact 2 - The Apache were a nomadic tribe of hunter gatherers. Men were in charge of hunting for food and protecting the camp and the women were in charge of the home

  • Fact 3 - Homes and Houses: Brush shelters are also known as wickiups
  • Fact 4 - Brush shelters or wickiups were very small shelters made purely for shelter when sleeping. A brush shelter or wickiup is cone-shaped and made of a wooden frame covered with branches, leaves, and grass (brush) . They were most often used as a temporary house. The Apache tribe built brush shelters to enable them move very quickly and without having to take hides and wooden poles with them
  • Fact 5 - The name of a famous Apache leaders were Geronimo, Cochise and Victorio

  • Fact 6 - Life style - Apaches lived in extended family groups. They were highly reliant on the buffalo
  • Fact 7 - Clothing for men: Men wore breechcloths which were made from a long rectangular piece of animal skin or cloth which was worn between the legs and tucked over a belt, so that the flaps of the breechcloth covered the front and behind. The legs were bare. They also wore war shirts which were made of leather
  • Fact 8 - Clothing: Special, highly decorated aprons were worn over breechcloths and worn on special occasions.  
  • Fact 9 - Clothing for women: Women wore leather dresses made of buckskin (the skin of a male deer)
  • Fact 10 - Clothing in the 1800's - Men started to wear cotton tunics and women wore calico dresses, blouses and skirts
  • Fact 11 - Shoes and footwear: Moccasins were made of soft leather or deerskin and sewn together with deer sinew. Moccasins were a soft slip on shoe, or slipper, consist of a sole and sides made of one piece of leather, stitched together at the top and were a light beige color.
  • Fact 12 - Headdresses: Apaches wore cloth or leather headbands
  • Fact 13 - Apaches traded with other tribes and were also known for their raids during which they stole horses and other goods
  • Fact 14 - Before horses were introduced by the Europeans the Apache used dogs to pull sleds called travois
  • Fact 15 - Women's Hair: Hair was kept long, sometimes braided and on special occasions braids were decorated with bright strips of cloth and shells
  • Fact 16 - Jewelry: Women wore shell jewelry, turquoise and bead choker necklaces
  • Fact 17 - Face paint / War Paint: Men wore bright face paint in times of war.
  • Fact 18 - Apache weapons: Weapons included bows and arrows, spears and knives. They also used shields made of buffalo hides
  • Fact 19 - Enemies of the Apache tribe included the Comanche, Spanish, Mexicans and Americans
  • Fact 20 - History: In 1861 the famous chief Cochise led the Apaches in protest at being forced onto reservations
  • Fact 21 - History: In 1874 the famous chief Geronimo escaped capture and fled to Mexico but was forced to surrender in 1886
  • Fact 22 - This tribe were recognised as known as great warriors and intelligent tacticians in battles
