In the Jay Treaty of 1794, the Maliseet were granted free travel between the United States and Canada because their territory spanned both sides of the border. They were hunters, fishers and farmers. They planted crops of corn (maize), beans and squash.
  • Fact 7 - The Abenaki were feared as fierce warriors. The Abenakis is an Algonquian language speaking Indian tribe. They were one of the five members of the Wabanaki Confederacy which consisted of the Abenaki, Míkmaq, Penawapskewi, Pestomuhkati and Wolastoqiyik

  • Fact 9 - The Pennacook, aka the Merrimack and Pawtucket, were an Algonquian-speaking tribe who farmed maize, corn, and squash. They primarily inhabited the Merrimack River valley of present-day New Hampshire. They were closely related to the Abenaki who they often fought with. They were decimated by European diseases to which they had no immunity.
  • Fact 10 - The Passamaquoddy tribe were hunter, fishers and farmers. They hunted inland in the winter and in the summer grouped together on the coast to farm corn, beans, and squash. They harvested seafood and sea mammals including porpoise.
